Setting the mechanical advance on the vehicle’s distributor is a technical process during which the technicians at Steves Auto Clinic will adjust the setting on the distributor – which is responsible for the triggering and distribution of the ignition spark in each combustion chamber.

By changing the settings – or setting the advance – the technician ensures that the ignition of compressed fuel and air in each engine cylinder is done towards the end of the ignition cycle. This will ensure a cleaner burning of the fuel in the combustion chamber, which will in turn lead to better fuel consumption and a possible increase in engine performance.

Inspecting the distributor and changing or correcting the mechanical advance on the distributor forms part of every major vehicle service.
