Colt 2,8 TD Pioneer
Gemeet aan sy hoekige, verouderde voorganger, is die nuwe Colt-reeks 'n reusestap vorentoe, en stileringsgewys was die Mitsubishi-ontwerpers in die kol met sy L200-model.
Die Pioneer, met sy breë voorkant, uitgeboude modderskerm en hoë grondvryhoogte, vertoon aggressief en doelgerig, en die luginlaat op sy enjinkap dra verder daartoe by.
Dié aantreklike stilering maak hom begeerlik, maar so ook sy kragtige 2,8 liter-turbodieselenjin met tussenkoeler wat net so uit die Pajero oorgeneem is.
Dié enjin, wat 'n hele 92 kW teen 'n redelik hoë (vir 'n diesel) 4 000 r/min en 'n allemintige 294 Nm teen 'n lae 2 000 r/min lewer, gee die Pioneer by verre die beste verrigting van al vyf bakkies, en daarby is die enjin soepel en stil.
Selfs al is die Colt die swaarste van die vyf, het dit hom net 15,7 s geneem om tot 100 km/h te versnel, en die verbysteektoetse het dit in onderskeidelik 9,8 s (60 - 100 km/h) en 12,9 s (80 - 120 km/h) kafgedraf.
Ook sy topsnelheid van 168 km/h was heelwat beter as dié van sy mededingers, en dit maak hom 'n plesier op die lang pad.

Dit het hom net 3,4 s geneem om van 100 km/h tot stilstand te kom, en ons het 'n gemiddelde verbruik van 10,62 liter/100 km aangeteken.
Sy ferm veringstelsel sorg vir goeie padmaniere, maar die teendeel is dat die bakkie stamperig is op slegte paaie.
Ook beperk dit sy wielbeweging effens, gemeet aand die Toyota en Ford, maar 'n standaard-ewenaarslot en sy gewillige enjin stel jou in staat om byna enige hindernis gerieflik baas te raak.
Tog is die Colt se binneruim, gemeet aand die ander bakkies, nogal spartaans.
Die enigste ligpunt is die standaard-leerbedeksel, maar 'n kombinasie met die res van die donker binneruim, laat dit die voertuig se binneruim effens somber voel.
'n Becker-radio, met bandspeler, lyk indrukwekkend, maar die toetsvoertuig had net twee luidsprekers agter.
Daar is egter plek vir nog twee luidsprekers voor.
Ook het die Pioneer nie 'n immobiliseerder of ratslot nie, en boonop is daar nie sentrale sluiting of elektriese ruitbeheer nie.
Nog iets wat die ander het, maar nie in die Colt is nie, is 'n sentrale konsole/ armlening met snuisterykassie tussen die voorsitplekke.
Tog het die Colt koppiehouers wat só geplaas is dat die sentrale luginlaat direk daarop blaas, en dakgemonteerde kaartliggies is nog 'n pluspunt.
Die Colt se kajuit bied gerieflike sitplek vir die voorste passasiers, maar sy binneruim (gemeet van die agterste ruglening tot teen die paneelbord voor) is meer as 100mm kleiner as dié van die Hilux.
Die gevolg is dat die agterste passasiers redelik beknop sit, en ook die inklimslag agter is moeilik.
Teen R 162 000 is die Colt die goedkoopste van die vyf, maar dit is steeds heelwat, vergelyke met die Ranger se R 162 500, as sy toerustingvlak in ag geneem word.
